Beyond the Fence of being Korean!!!

    Many people often say, "One year passed by." As a matter of fact, it is not "Time" which passes by, but it is we human beings (or I) that move into the course of the New Year. Since the moving subject is we (not Time), we can own the time individually and work within its boundary (or fence) to control what we have under God's guidance. Do you have a New Year's resolution (or big plans) to make this year a more meaningful one for our community (Americans, Koreans, and other ethnic groups)? My challenge to you is to go over the fence of "Being Koreans" to move into a bigger world of "Being Us" and further into the fence of "Being Americans". Take a good look at the bright sunshine, beautiful flowers in the fields, marvelous rain drops in the sky, and green trees in the woods. They do not discriminate among people of different colors and backgrounds. We Koreans need to remove our small mask and try to be creative minority leaders to play a bigger role in this great society. It is our responsibility to expand the horizon of understandings for other ethnic groups. This can be done through mutual understanding and continuous learning.

    More than 30 years have passed since Koreans with big dreams immigrated into this area of central PA. We Koreans, being diligent and tenacious with pioneering spirits, have established our own history in this community. To make it more meaningful, we have our corporate responsibility to teach our culture and good tradition so that our younger generations become good citizens, creative minority leaders, and thus make a new history by making more contributions to the society. I hope that the CPKA can be the stepping stone to make your dreams come true. In this regard, the CPKA provided scholarship awards to 5 excellent students at the 2005 Year-end party. These scholarship recipients are our hope for the future. As they write in their essays, they will make good examples for all Koreans in the future. In 2006, the CPKA plans to provide 10 scholarship awards with the help of the Scholarship Committee and the CPKA Board of Directors. Therefore, I ask all of you to participate in this great endeavor or journey to plant good seeds for the betterment of our community. This cannot be done without your help and cooperation. The CPKA and all the scholarship recipients need your help, continuous guidance, and prayer. Let's try to make a big difference by obtaining this goal.

    Though Koreans have many strengths, diligence, tenacity, and wisdom, we have not been properly treated nor respected due to a lack of unity and cooperation. Of course, it is difficult to live in this country with different languages and cultures. This is the very reason why we Koreans should be united under the CPKA with one goal of making the Korean community stronger. This can be done when all of you participate in all CPKA activities. As most of you well know, one of the Korean students (Han Lee) was shot in the head. When he and his family came to America with a great hope and the American dream, they had never expected this kind of tragedy. We all pray for fast recovery from his wound. We do our best to help the Lee family by collecting donations and getting signatures for the petition. This is a good example of why we Koreans should be united under one banner, the CPKA. This is my challenge to you this year. The CPKA needs your understanding, help and prayer. Thank you.

우리(We)를 알고 우리의 우리(fence)를 뛰어넘는 한해를 만들자!

  흔히들 또 한 해가 가고, 라는 식으로 자기자 신은 가만히 있는데 세월이 흘러간 다고 생각합 니다만, 보다 적극적 으로 생각하 면 우리가 시간의 궤도를 따라 새해 속으로 들어온 것입니 다. 흐름의 주체는 언제나 나 자신이 고 나 자신만 이 흐르는 시간을 통제할 수 있는 것입니 다. 새해는 그저 주어지 는 것이 아니고, 내가 새해 속으로 뛰어들 어 새해로 하여금 새해답 게 정말 새로운 의미 있는 한해로 가꾸고 다듬을 때만 새해가 되는 것입니 다. 이번 새해에 는 보다 적극적 으로 나의 우리(fence)를 뛰어넘 어 우리(we)라는 울타리 로 들어와 서 함께 사랑과 생명을 나누어 야 하겠습 니다. 그리고 한 걸음 더 나아가 우리(we)라는 울타리 도 뛰어넘 어 이 거대한 미국사 회에서 지혜로 운 소수민 족으로 함께 어울리 고 참여하 는 한인이 되는 새해로 가꾸고 다듬으 시기 바랍니 다.

  큰 꿈과 새로운 포부로 이곳 중앙 펜실베 니아에 이민 온 한인동 포의 역사도 이제는 30년이 지났습 니다. 어려운 이민의 삶 속에서 선구자 로서의 길을 묵묵히 걸어가 는 여러분 이 계시기 에 우리 미주 한인들 의 역사는 이루어 져 가는 것입니 다. 이민 1세들의 노고와 인내를 통하여 우리 후손들 이 새로운 역사를 만들어 가고, 미국사회에 공헌할 수 있는 위치에 까지 왔습니 다. 그들의 꿈을 실현하 기 위해서 는 우리 이민 1세들의 끊임없 는 지도, 협조와 기도가 필요한 때입니 다. 우리 이곳 한인들 도 이제는 미주 한인의 역사를 만들 때가 되지 않았는 가 라고 생각합 니다. 한인회가 이러한 여러분 의 뜻과 희망을 함께 키워가 는 꿈의 산실이 되는 2006년 한해가 되기를 바랍니 다. 이러한 노력의 일환으 로 지난 연말에 는 여러 한인 동포님 들의 이름으 로 5명의 학생에 게 장학금 을 전달하 였습니다. 새해에는 10명의 학생들 에게 장학금 을 주기로 계획을 세우고 여러 이사님 들과 함께 새해를 출발하 였습니다. 후세를 위하여 더 많은, 더 좋은 씨앗을 뿌리고, 그 싹들이 잘 자랄 수 있도록 가꾸어 서 우리가 못다한 일들을 후세들 이 다 감당할 수 있도록 힘을 모으는 데 동참해 주시기 부탁 드리겠 습니다.

  이 지역에 서도 한국인 들은 부지런 함과 강인한 생활력 그리고 지혜로 운 민족으 로 널리 인정받 고 있습니 다. 낮선 땅에서 생활하 는 어려움 도 잘 알지만, 그럴수록 더 적극적 으로 한인회 의 여러 활동에 관심을 가지고 참가해 주시고 유익한 사업을 위하여 기금을 모금하 는 일에 많이 동참해 주시기 바랍니 다.

  이미 여러분 도 알고 계시겠 지만 우리 젊은이 이 한우군 이 총탄에 맞아 생사의 갈림길 에 서 있습니 다. 먼저 이 한우군 의 쾌유를 빕니다. 이들 가족도 큰 꿈을 가지고 이곳에 왔지만 이러한 불행한 일을 당했습 니다. 이러한 불우한 한인 또 우리의 이웃을 돕기 위하여 한인회 와 여러 한인 학생들 이 서명운 동과 모금운 동을 함께 해오고 있습니 다. 여러분들이 우리의 사랑을 전할 수 있도록 많이 동참해 주시기 바랍니 다.

  이 지역에 오늘의 한인회 가 있기까 지, 한인사회를 위해 기도해 주시고 봉사해 주신 여러분 에게 다시 한번 깊은 감사의 뜻을 전하면 서, 앞으로도 이 지역 한인회 를 위하여 변함없 는 애정과 협조를 부탁드 립니다. 여러분의 가정과 직장 그리고 사업장 위에 하나님 의 크신 사랑과 축복하 심이 넘쳐나 기를 빕니다.
